121 deputies voted, 44 were pro, 4 abstained and 73 opposed, Croatian media reports.
During the vote, a pro-Palestinian protest was held before Parliament.
At the same time, 56 MPs sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, demanding that Croatia recognise Palestine as soon as possible and suspend arms exports to Israel due to, they said, the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
The letter stresses that recognition would have a strong symbolic value and would show Croatia's commitment to the two-state solution, which the international community has considered the key to lasting peace in the Middle East for years.
Milanvic for recognition, government against
We remember that President Zoran Milanovic said in New York on Monday that Croatia should recognise Palestine. However, Foreign Minister Gordan Grliq Radman said a day later that there was still no time for the move.
“Conditions for recognition of the Palestinian state have not yet been fulfilled because it is necessary to stop the conflicts and release all hostages”, Grlic Radman told reporters in the Magyars of the UN General Assembly.
