Kirk, 31, radio and podcast commentator and influential ally of Donald Trump, is known for his role in strengthening the republican president's base on young voters. He was shot dead Wednesday in what Utah Governor Spencer Cox called political assassinations.
The shooting, recorded in the video that was quickly distributed online, occurred at noon, at a 3,000-part event at the Utah Valley University in Orem, about 65km south of Salt Lake City.
The suspect, believed to have shot Kirk in the neck by a sniper position on campus roof, continues to be on the run, Utah Public Security Department Commissioner Beau Mason said at a press conference four hours after the event.
Security footage showed a man dressed in black clothes, suspected of authoring the event, Mason said. But eight hours after the assassination, authorities said no person had yet been detained, reported Reuters.
State police announced on Wednesday evening that two people were detained and one had been questioned, but both were released.
There's no connection between them and shooting. Investigations and search for the author are continuing”, said in the statement.
