Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested about 33 hours after Kirk, the 31-year-old rightist activist, was shot dead in Orem on Wednesday.
Speaking of ABC News, Cox, Republican, said people about Robinson have collaborated with investigations. He appeared in some American media Sunday morning, where he reiterated his concerns about social networks following Kirk's murder.
The governor was also asked for a New York Times report claiming Robinson had spoken to others after shooting through the Dicrd platform, including claims that he had joked, saying he was the author of the attack. Cox told ABC News: “Everything we can confirm is that those conversations were really happening, and they didn't believe it was him. It was, it was just a joke until he, you know, admitted it was him. ”
Robinson was arrested Thursday evening after surrendering to police. Kirk was speaking at the University of the Utah Valley, in an open space event organised by Touring Point USA, organization he cofounded when he was shot to death.
This event was part of “American Comeback Tour”, a series of meetings at different US universities. Cox had earlier told the Wall Street Journal that Robinson, born in Utah, was “directly inflated with left-hand ideology”.
When asked about it during the State of the Union programme on CNN on Sunday, he said the information was provided by friends and family members of the suspect.
“There is much more that we are learning and will learn,” he explained, adding that when official charges are dropped, there will be much more evidence and information available then”.
The governor said that among those who are co-operating with authorities is Robinson's roommate, who, according to him, was also his partner. He said the partner had no knowledge of the alleged shooting, had been extremely cooperative “” and was working with investigators “at this moment”.
Cox also confirmed that Robinson partner currently was “in the transition process from male to female”, but, when asked by CNN, said authorities still do not know whether this has anything to do with the investigation. An indictment by the state of Utah confirms that Robinson was arrested under suspicion for the crimes of “heavy murder”, “illegal firearm” and “obstructing justice”.
He's unjustly being held on parole in Utah County Prison. We are interviewing all sorts of people who know him and are trying to learn more about what the motive really was,” said Cox. / BBC/
