British police have arrested three people on suspicion of helping Russian intelligence services, stressing the threat posed to NATO allies as Russia pursues hybrid warfare against Western powers.
Arrests also coincide with US President Donald Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom, an ally of NATO, during which the theme of the end of Russia's war in Ukraine is expected to be one of the main agenda points in bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
NATO allies have sounded the alarm for a growing number of Russian intelligence plots to commit sabotage acts within their countries, some of which have been successful as Moscow and the West clashed over the war in Ukraine.
London's Metropolitan Police said two men and a woman were arrested in Essex. They weren't appointed by the police, they're broadcasting Telegrafi.
The three were detained on Wednesday, 17 September, by antiterrorism officers under investigation for alleged violations of national security laws, helping Russian intelligence services.
The men are 41 and 46 years old, and the woman is 35. All were released on parole.
Commander Dominic Murphy, chief of command against terrorism of the Metropolitan Police, said in a statement that “through our recent work of national security cases, we are seeing a growing number of those we would describe as represented by the foreign intelligence services”.
