Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested in September 2024 after a Secret Service agent saw him in some bush near Trump International Golf Club in Florida, at a time when Trump was running for president. Routh, found with a rifle, was charged with attempting to kill a key presidential candidate, assault on a federal officer and violation of weapons laws.
MSNBC writes that a jury found Routh guilty of all five counts, two of which carry the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Although there was no legal experience, Routh represented himself in court and called only three witnesses -- a sniper instructor and two former employees. Judge Aileen M. Canon interrupted Routh several times during the opening statement and during the questioning of witnesses.
According to Secret Service agent who first saw Trump playing golf when Routh was arrested. The gun found by agents had a telescope, an extended clip and a serial number “erased and unread”, according to the FBI. The Justice Department statement said agents also found documents that included a list of dates when Trump was expected to appear.
A witness announced to authorities that Routh had left a box containing a hand letter that said: the dear “world ... It was an attempt to kill Donald Trump, but I am very sorry I failed”.
I never wanted to kill anyone,” argued Routh in court and said the only thing he was guilty of was that “deeply cared about this place. ”
This incident was the second attempt at Trump's assassination over the past year, after he survived another assassination in July, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a bullet passed by his ear./Periscopi/
