It's a rare meeting of American military leaders in one country. It is not clear why Hegseth ordered generals and Admirals to meet in a country with such short notice, and two of the officials said it has created uncertainty among expected participants. Senior military officials in some cases command thousands of troops. Most have detailed plans weeks ago, which have now been postponed.
“People are rushing to change their plans and see if they should participate”, an American official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
It was not clear how many officials would attend the meeting, but it is rare to have so many senior officials in the same room at the same time.
Asked to comment on this meeting, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said: “War Secretary will address his top military leadership early next week”.
Parnell's office did not answer questions about the number of officers, the purpose of the meeting or why Hegseth called them so suddenly.
Trump has ordered that the department be renamed at the War Department, a change that will require the approval of Congress.
The United States has troops all over the world, including distant countries like South Korea, Japan and throughout the Middle East commanded by generals and Admirals with two, three and four stars.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has acted at an amazing speed to re-organize the department, dismissing generals and senior Admirals, while seeking to implement Trump's national security agenda and eliminate the diversity initiatives he calls fair. In February, he fired Air Force General Charles Brown, chairman of the Joint Army Staff, along with five Admirals and other generals, into an unprecedented reshuffle of the US military leadership.
Last month, Hegseth fired the Pentagon's intelligence chief and two other top military commanders. In May, Hegseth ordered a 20% drop in the number of top army officers. In that May memo, Hegseth said there would also be a reduction of at least 20% of the number of officers general at the National Guard and an additional 10% reduction among general officers throughout the army. More generals and Admirals do not lead to more success”, Hegseth said at the time.
“may be more common than people think... (but) lack of clarity does not help”, the official said. /Periscope/
