EU envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue Peter Sorensen had visited Kosovo earlier this month. Just weeks later, Sorensen visited Serbia as well. Of course, the main theme was dialogue between two countries, reports Periscope.
These meetings, not by chance, took place as quick speed. According to the EU office, Sorensen is preparing a new meeting at the level of the two countries' chief negotiators.
So confirmed the EU's Periscope office, in a written response given 27 August.
“EU High Representative Sorensen is visiting Belgrade in preparation for an upcoming meeting of chief negotiators in the nearest possible period”, It says in answer.
Otherwise, the EU's envoy for dialogue, during the visit to Pristina, had discussed the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement with Kosovo officials.
Asked by reporters on the current state of dialogue for normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia, Sorensen said briefly that the process is “active”.
The agreement was reached between the two sides in 2023.
Although not signed, the EU insists the agreement is binding.
The 11 provisions document, among other things, envisions a level of self-government for the Serb community in Kosovo, mutual recognition of state symbols, avoiding Serbia's blocking of Kosovo's membership in international organisations, and the obligation for Pristina and Belgrade to implement all previous agreements reached in dialogue.
The latest round of Kosovo's dialogue, with EU mediation, was held 10 June.
US involvement in dialogue
US President Donald Trump, in an interview for Fox News in January this year, had warned of his return to the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue process.
According to Trump, his predecessor in office, Joe Biden, has damaged the prospects of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia through decisions “bulls” that he has undertaken.
“also, during my first mandate, Serbia and Kosovo were facing hard, as they have for many decades, and this long conflict was about to explode in LUPHA. I stopped it (Biden has damaged long-term prospects with some very stupid decisions, but I'll fix it again!)”
Trump, even said he should have received the Nobel Prize for resolving the Kosovo-Serbia problem.
And did you see the Congo case? You can say Serbia and Kosovo. You can say a lot of them. The biggest is India and Pakistan. I should have taken it four or five times”, he said when asked whether he could win the Nobel Prize if he solved the problem between Israel and Iran.
It has been 14 years since the start of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, a process aimed at normalising relations between the two countries, but has not yet produced a final and legally binding agreement.
Dialogue began on March 9, 2011, under the European Union's mediation. First as a technical process for practical issues such as free movement, license plates, and cadastres.
But over time, the process took on political character, including the most sensitive topics affecting sovereignty, status and bilateral reports.
In April 2013 the first agreement was reached in Brussels, which was considered a historic step towards normalisation.
However, its implementation has remained partial, and many key points have remained pending, including the formation of the Serb majority municipalities' Association.
The process was accompanied by continuing impasses and political tensions, while in 2020, under American President Donald Trump's administration, an agreement was reached for economic normalisation at the White House, which brought recognition of Kosovo by Israel.
New efforts were made in recent years, including the “Agreement in Ohrid” reached in 2023, which stressed the implementation of existing agreements and de-facto recognition of the reality of the two states.
Even in 2025, however, dialogue continues without a clear epilogue. /Periscopi/
