US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melanie Trump have expressed the importance of returning Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia during the war.
However, the important thing in Trump administration is that it reduced funding for an important group that traced evidence of Russian war crimes, including the forced shift of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children.
The group, dubbed Confliction Observatory in Ukraine, directed by the Yale University Humanitarian Research Laboratory, was established in 2022 with State Department backing to document war crimes and atrocities Russia is committing in Ukraine.
This observatory was committed to collecting and analyzing evidence for alleged war crimes from Russia, including Moscow's efforts to displace and forcibly adopt Ukrainian children.
One of the group's greatest achievements was the record of the degree of deportation of Ukrainian children, for which the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged child deportation crimes.
However, according to CNN in March this year, the Trump administration temporarily suspended funding for the Conflict Observatory in Ukraine. This decision was made in a period when the organisation was conducting deep investigations into war crimes exercised by Russia. Despite the interruption, the funding was temporarily restored to allow for sending evidence to Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency./Periscopi/
