Europe is implementing new punitive measures against undisciplined tourists this summer, with fines amounting to thousands of euros for behavior that was once tolerated, from bathing clothes off the beach to driving the car with slippers.
In Turkey, a passenger who unties his seat belt before full aircraft ban could be fined 62 euros. In Albuffeira, Portugal, road dressing may cost up to 1,500 euros, while in Spain's Balatric Islands, drinking alcohol in public could bring a fine of up to 3,000 euros.
Local authorities say the measures are not intended to intimidate tourists, but to maintain the welfare of residents and promote responsible tourism.
“Rules are to protect the experience of most well - behaved visitors,” said Jessica Harvey Taylor of the Spanish Tourism Office in London.
In Malaga, a sensational 10-point campaign was launched to educate vacationers on proper behavior, including the avoidance of waste, noise and careless use of electric scooters.
Fines are concrete, and police are closely monitoring tourist areas, especially those with living nights.
In Greece, obtaining a shell from the beach could cost up to 1,000 euros. In Italy, walking in the paths of Cinque Terre in inappropriate shoes could bring a fine of 2,500 euros. Even smoking on public beaches in France is now banned and punished at 90 euros.
Experts say it is the response to years of local discontent towards overturism and lack of respect for the host communities.
However, there are concerns about the long-term effectiveness of these measures. For the time being, police presence has increased, and tourists are advised to get acquainted with the rules ahead of the trip.
In Albuffeira, billboards and information plates are located at hotels, but many visitors are still unaware of the new regulations.
