The young man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after being separated from the two prisoners with whom he shared the cell.
According to the Carabinieri, the event took place around 5:00, while prison police found the young man unconscious and, despite immediate attempts to rescue him, changed his life a few minutes later.
Argentino was in custody since the end of March, after accepting the authorship of crime that shocked public opinion.
According to authorities, he had shown serious signs of depression and suicidal thinking since the early days of his imprisonment, which brought him special oversight.
However, after reviews by prison psychologists and therapists, the move was interrupted 15 days ago, after his situation was considered stable.
According to Argentino's lawyer, he has called the event “drama of a threatened tragedy”.
I requested a psychiatric evaluation of Stephano because I knew his condition and the problems that accompanied him. But the court refused. At least one life could have been saved. Now the state must take responsibility for this painful end”, he said.
On the other hand, lawyer Concetta La Torre, representative of the victim's mother, Sara Champanella, stressed that this event has caused new wounds for both families.
It's a terrible end to a terrible story. He decided the fate of two families. Sarah's family is experiencing tremendous pain. ”
Sara Campanella, 22, a student, was shot dead on March 31st in Viale Gazzi, near the Police Hospital in Messina, shortly after the completion of lessons.
According to authorities, the murder weapon, a knife, has not yet been found, while after the event, Argentino fled to his hometown, Noto, where he was arrested several hours later by Carabinieri.
The Messiah's prosecution had called for immediate trial for the accused, who was expected to appear at the first session on September 10th, where he would face grave charges of murder by presumption and acts of cruelty.
The Messiah's Public Prosecutor has already launched an investigation into the circumstances of Argentino's death to determine if there was any shortcomings in his oversight.
