Nicolas Guillou was sanctioned by the United States of America on Wednesday. He was the judge of the preliminary procedure at the Special Court and sometimes had to face complaints by lawyers from former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders, who are being tried in The Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Frenchman dropped almost every request of Hashim Thaci's defence, Kadri Veselin, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, while a clash of this judge with David Hooper, the lawyer of the former Kosovo president, is remembered.
A few days after Thaci, Veselini, Selimi and Krasniqi were sent to Special custody in The Hague in early November 2020, Guillo had had had a confrontation with lawyer Hooper, who wanted to know why at the Special Court, considered by Kosovo, there were no state symbols.
Not only is it a stain on Kosovo and Kosovars... The Kosovo court, but there is nothing from Kosovo. There is no Kosovo emblem. Maybe you can pay attention to that. If it's the Kosovo Court, we could have the black eagle with the red” here, the lawyer said.
Judge Guillo taunted them.
You could have worn a red suit”, he said laughing.
The US imposed sanctions Wednesday on Guillou, another judge and two International Criminal Court prosecutors (GJNP).
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called JNP “a threat to national security that has served as an instrument of legal war against the United States and Israel”.
The U.S. State Department announced that Guillou was sanctioned for the decision authorising the issuance of JNP's arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in connection with Israel's Gaza war.
“These individuals are foreign persons who are directly engaged in the efforts of the International Criminal Court to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute citizens of the United States or Israel, without consenting any of these nations”, said Secretary Rubio, who warned that the Trump Administration will continue the “whatever action we consider necessary to protect our troops, our sovereignty and our allies from illegal and groundless actions of the NNP”.
In June of this year, Guillou resigned from the Special Court after being elected to the International Criminal Court.
Special Chairman Ekaterina Trendafilova had, among other things, praised Judge Guillou and expressed deep gratitude for his extraordinary “contribution in fulfilling the mandate of the DHSK with, among other things, his work as the Court of Pre-Procedure Procedure and Court only”.
Now the French judge will have to face US sanctions, which include freezing any assets he and his three colleagues may have in American jurisdictions. /Periscopi/
