Former President Kim Keon Hee denied all charges during a four-hour trial hearing in Seoul on Tuesday. But the court issued an arrest warrant, because there is danger it could destroy evidence.
This is the first time that both the former president and the first lady in South Korea have been imprisoned.
Yoon was arrested in January to face trial for a failed attempt to impose military law last year that plunged the country into chaos and eventually led to its collapse.
Prosecutors say Kim, 52, won over $577,940 by participating in a price manipulation scheme involving shares of Deutsch Motors, a trader BMW in South Korea.
While this reportedly occurred before her husband was elected head of the country. She allegedly also accepted two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace as a bribe from the Church of Unification in exchange for business favors.
Kim is also accused of interfering with candidates' appointments during parliamentary partial elections in 2022 and last year's general elections.
Kim appeared at Tuesday's hearing, wearing a black suit and a black skirt.
“I sincerely apologize for causing problems despite being a non-profile person”, she told reporters.
While president, Yoon vetoed three bills proposed by the opposition seeking an investigation by a special council on charges against Kim.
He launched the last veto in November, a week before announcing the state of emergency.
A special council was established in June this year after Yoon's rival, Lee Yae Myung, became president. /Periscopi/
