In fact, Alaska's Little Diomede Island is less than three miles from Russia's Great Diomede Island in the Bering Strait, showing how close both countries are geographically close.
During the Cold War, the base was considered a particularly significant “in US protection against the then Soviet Union, according to Congress Library.
Despite this proximity, Putin will be the first Russian president to visit Anchorage.
Elmandorf-Richardson is the home of planes like F-22 Raptor a fighter plane that Air Force says “cannot be compared to any known or projected” fighter aircraft.
The US Department of Defence describes the area as a picturesque, majestic, snow-covered, lakes, rivers, glaciers and many wild animals”.
It also advises visitors who try to drive on the basis of carrying emergency boxes, food, blankets, and extra fuel, since it is so remote.
Some have criticised Trump's decision to hold talks on the Russia-Ukrainian conflict in Alaska.
“It is easy to imagine Putin arguing during his meetings with Trump that, well, the territories can change hands”, said Nigel Gould-Davids, former British ambassador to Belarus.
“We gave you Alaska. Why Ukraine cannot give us a portion of its territory”, he added. /Periscopi
