Rassic said he is pleased that the assembly has managed to elect the speaker and that the process is moving ahead after a long institutional blockade.
The “Day, after many hearings, to be honest, I'm glad we moved a step forward and made the speaker of parliament. I believe we got out of the cramp we had, he said.
He stressed that he was the only candidate outside the Serbian List and that the proposal for deputy chairman had made it itself because of the lack of support from others.
I was the only one outside the Serbian List and self-proposal occurred because there was no one else to propose to me. From a political concept and all the effort I've given these 20 years, I thought it's time to start for a democratic society”, Rassic said.
He criticised the current representatives of the Serb community in the assembly, saying they did not adequately represent the people they sent to.
The representation we've had has not been adequate, nor have those representatives who are there adequate to represent the Serbian people's opinion”, he added.
Regarding claims by some opposition MPs that his vote is contrary to the Constitution, Raspic said he has asked for confirmation by constitutional experts, who have told him there are no legal violations.
Some of the MPs told me that such voting is unconstitutional. I said this is not unconstitutional. Yesterday afternoon, I went to meet some people who are dealing with constitutional issues and told me there is no violation if a representative like me is voted for the vice president of the assembly, he stated.
Rassic warned he would run again for the deputy chair post, in line with parliamentary rules.
I'll run myself tomorrow. If the Serbian List candidate is not voted, as you know, Mr. Basha. We have the right to run up to three times and if we don't go three times, then we don't have the right to run,” Rassic explained.
He also expressed surprise at the opposition's failure, recalling earlier co-operation with opposition parties.
“I really believe in the willingness of opposition and political parties. But I remind you that I have been in politics for a long time and have worked with the PDK, but also with the AAK, the LDK and the Initiative. I think it might have been a surprise”, he said at the end. /Periscope/
