European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia Tonino Picaula has declared that the European Union already has very clear the political profile of Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq, and the way he exercises power. According to him, under current circumstances, Serbia has no real chance of joining the EU.
There are no more illusions about who Vuciq is and what his power represents. The main question now is how to build the position on the political alternative to those who can take power tomorrow, although today it looks like a vague and unstable political scene,” Picula said in an interview for Croatian television “Noova TV”, broadcast by Index.hr
He stressed that although current governance in Serbia has legality, the opposition protesting on the street is gaining more and more legitimacy.
In this context, Picula also mentioned the recent tragedy in Novi Sad, which resulted in the collapse of the railway station roof, killing 16 people. The 17th round, unfortunately, could come from increasingly severe clashes taking place on the streets of Serbian cities,”, he warned.
Eurodeputt stressed that this is a serious signal to those considering possible compromises with the Serbian government. “The solution should come through free and fair elections,” he added.
Commenting on Croatia's role, Picaula said his country should take a more firm stance on, as he put it, Vuciqi's power manipulations. He cited cases where Croatian citizens are banned and expelled from Serbia, as an example of nationalist rhetoric and not constructive behaviour by Belgrade.
