After the meeting, the Israeli prime minister's office announced that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) would prepare to take over the town of Gaza, while simultaneously distributing humanitarian aid to civilians outside fighting zones.
The security cabinet also adopted five principles for ending the war -- the disarming of Hamas, the return of all hostages, the deilitarisation of Gaza, Israel's security control over the Gaza Strip, as well as the creation of an alternative civil administration that will be neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.
According to Israeli media reports, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir was opposed to Gaza's invasion, claiming it would jeopardise the hostages and burden the army even more.
Otherwise, the latest conflict began with Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and another 251 were kidnapped. It is believed that Hamas still holds about 50 hostages.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, over 61 thousand Palestinians have been killed in Israel's revenge offensive. /Periscope/
