Justice Ministry Reaction Over Tragic Case in Gjilan
The Ministry of Justice is deeply concerned and shocked by the serious event that took place in Gjilan, where three citizens lost their lives. Mefail and Edonnis Shkodra, suspected of this triple murder and currently on the run, had previously been in custody and had been released under the Constitutional Court's decision in Pristina, given the special prosecutor's request of the Republic of Kosovo.
This decision is unintelligible and unacceptable, especially considering that the two suspects were subject to investigations of serious criminal acts such as conviction and obligation. Release them constitutes a serious institutional neglect and has produced tragic and irreparable consequences.
The justice ministry calls on the Kosovo and Judiciary Prosecutorial Council to initiate disciplinary procedures immediately against all prosecutors and judges who have been involved. Legal, institutional, and moral responsibility must be complete and uncompromising.
Also, the ministry calls on all political forces to stop continuing obstacles to reforms in the justice system. Reform in justice is neither a luxury nor a matter of close political interest but is a must to ensure the security, justice and future of the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.
Justice is nobody's property. It should serve citizens and the rule of law. This tragic event should serve as an alarm for all, without functional justice, there can be no security, justice, or social peace.
The justice ministry remains committed to advancing necessary reforms and building a fair, independent and responsible justice system to citizens.
