“Death for Albanians” and “Gas for Albanians” are nationalist, anti-Albanian calls heard on Saturday at the gym in Kumanovo, where basketball matches took place between northern Macedonia and Romania.
This sparked sharp reactions from Albanians there, but also in Albania and Kosovo.
Racist anti-Albanian calls were condemned today by Prime Minister Hristian Mickoski.
He warned that these would be investigated.
“Organisers of the Basketball Federation and the Kumanovo municipality condemned xenophobia calls. To be honest while I was there, I didn't even notice the call, as it was about small band fans. But I want to join the condemnation of nationalism and xenophobia, as well as to appeal appeals to any typhogroup to support their teams in the right way. That is why the government supports it, while all the other one will be subject to investigations”, he said in front of the media.
“Wants xenophobia and nationalist calls of some in the Macedonian match ) Romania, calls that did not receive support from other attendees”, Mickoski said, among other things.
Reactions were made by the deputy prime minister coming from the Albanian ranks, Izet Mexhidi, who said that hate-citing songs have no place in society.
“object sharply to racist and anti-Albanian calls heard during the basketball match. Disgusting words and songs that incite hatred have no place in our state and society”, Medzit said.
Until, the Democratic Union for Integration, in a statement yesterday, has demanded the resignation of Deputy Interior Minister Astrit Iseni, as well as Deputy Sports Minister Safije Sadiki Shaini.
Because of their failure to react, protect public interest and address a serious incident directly affecting interethnic co-existence and the dignity of Albanian citizens. At the same time, we demand that all Albanian representatives in Government who are in key executive positions be distanced publicly from this unacceptable act and raise this issue to the government's next meeting with the forecast of heavy sanctions for responsibilities and immediately withdraw from this Government that fuels division and hatred, because it shames us”, said DUI's reaction.
In connection with the case, the Kumanovo Public Prosecutor has already launched investigations, collecting information on the event in question.
Reactions from Kosovo, Osman condemned calls, Kurti no words
President Vjosa Osmani said these calls are unacceptable.
Kosovo's “Republic will firmly protect the dignity of Albanians, wherever they live”, she has said.
” Albanians are autochthon people on their lands, as well as deserve to be treated with dignity and equality, just as any other community”, Osmani stressed.
But no word was spoken by incumbent Albin Kurti, who was criticised by the chairman of the post PDK, Memli Krasniqi.
Krasniqi said Kurti has moral responsibility for the anti-Albanian climate in northern Macedonia.
The North Macedonia government has the responsibility to distance itself clearly from any extremist act, because silence is considered approval. Just as another silence is becoming increasingly noisy -- that of the outgoing prime minister of Kosovo, who as the cabinet's co-ordinator in Skopje, bears moral and political responsibility for this anti-Albanian climate that is growing daily”, Krasniqi said.
Meanwhile, Albania's Parliament Speaker, Elisa Spiropali, has said it is unacceptable and it is a reminder that the <x0-way path towards a fair, comprehensive society and mutual respect requires constant engagement”.
The experience of hatred that promotes violence, ethnic conflict and racism, there is no place in any public space, much less in sports, which essentially carries the spirit of unity, of cooperation, of fair play and respect to another”, she said in her response./Periscopi/
