It was not immediately clear why Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz, who headed the Defense Intelligence Agency, was dismissed.
Hegseth's Purge expanded later on Friday. An American official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that in addition to Kruse, Hegseth had also ordered the dismissal of the US naval reserve chief and the commander of the Special Marine War Command.
The three officials said the reason they were fired is not known.
“Determination of another top national security official highlights the dangerous custom of the Trump Administration to treat intelligence as a test of loyalty rather than as a protection for our country”, said US Senator Mark Warner, who is deputy head of the Senate Committee for Intelligence.
