The Disaster and Emergency Management Agency said the earthquake was focused on the province's Sındırgır district in western Turkey.
The quake measured at a depth of 11 miles [11 km].
Interior Minister Ali Yerlicaya said an 81-year-old person lost his life after being pulled out of a collapsed building.
He failed to survive injuries despite medical intervention.
Twenty - nine others who were injured have also been rescued, none of them are in danger of life.
Initial estimates indicate that 16 buildings in 68 neighbourhoods have collapsed as a result of subsequent earthquake and shocks.
Turkey's President Recep Tayip Erdogan expressed his condolences to all affected, saying he would closely follow the developments. / AA/ Periscopi/
