European leaders urged US President Donald Trump on Wednesday not to reach a unilateral peace agreement for Ukraine with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during their face-to-face meeting later this week in Alaska.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had called the virtual summit with Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders, after the fear grew that Putin, former KGB staff, would seek to convince the American president to see the war under his terms.
After the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump was a very clear “” that Washington wants to reach a ceasefire and that Ukraine's territorial issues cannot be negotiated without Zelensky.
Trump, who described the call as a very good “”, told reporters that if his meeting with Putin goes well, a subsequent meeting between the Russian president and Zelensky could happen “almost immediately” later.
“has a very good chance of having a second date which will be more productive than first. Because the first is: I'm going to find out where we are, what we're doing”, Trump said during a presentation at Kennedy Center.
Two European diplomats familiar with the virtual meeting told CNN that during the conversation, Trump appeared to be pushing for an unconditional ceasefire at his meeting with Putin.
Trump said he believed a ceasefire would be a sign of goodwill from Russia, and also said Ukrainian territory is not to be negotiated by him, sources said.
The leaders of Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, NATO and the European Union have participated in the virtual meeting with Trump. It was followed by another larger meeting of “Gates Coalition”, attended by US Vice President JD Vance.
After the meetings, Zelensky said the leaders agreed to “the common principles” to define the “negotiating platform” that will be held in Alaska, including the focus on a ceasefire and security guarantee “truly reliable”.
Everything dealing with Ukraine should be discussed exclusively with Ukraine. We must prepare a trilateral format for talks. There's got to be a truce. This is number one”. /Periscopi/
