Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will recognise the Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, following the example of Britain, France and Canada.
He said the decision was made after the Palestinian Authority promised demilitarisation, keeping general elections and recognising Israel's right to exist, stressing that the solution to two states is the best <x0 hopes to end violence and suffering in Gaza”, the BBC reports.
Israel has rejected this step, saying that “matches terrorism”.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 61 thousand people have been killed by Israeli offensive since 2023, while more than 200 have died of starvation. The war began after Hamas ' attack on October 7, 2023, where about 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages were taken.
