The Constitutional Public Prosecutor in Kumanovo has launched investigations into elements of a possible criminal act, linked to calls containing hate speech, following anti-Albanian cheers made by strangers during a basketball match between North Macedonia and Romania held in Kumanovo on 2 August.
In the match, which was under the second prequalify phase for the World Cup to be held in Qatar in 2027, senior Macedonian government officials also participated.
According to Albanian politicians in northern Macedonia during this sporting event, calls were heard, such as the good Albanian “is dead Albanian”, <x2 use of gas for Albanians”, “Pure Macedonia”.
According to the latest census, Albanians make up 24.3 percent of the total population of 1.8 million.
The event has sparked reactions not only in northern Macedonia, but also in Kosovo and Albania, countries with Albanian majority.
Northern Macedonia Prime Minister Hristian Mickoski, who was present at the match, on Monday sentenced “nationalist calls and xenophobic”.
Speaking to the media, Mickoski said that, although he was in the hall during the match, “had not noticed” the fans' calls, claiming it was about “a small group of people”.
“I want to use this case to join the condemnation of nationalism and xenophobia ʹ first for what happened during the [North] and Romanian basketball match, and then to send a message to all fan groups -- to support in a sports way, support their team and national representative of Macedonia”, Mickoski said./Periscopi/
