The number of new cases of cancer in Kosovo is increasing, as the Oncology Clinic at KKUK faces a large influx of patients every day. During the first six months of this year alone, about a thousand and a hundred cases have been recorded, while the most common cancer in Kosovo remains the breast cancer, with 235 new cases, most of which in women over the age of 50.
The director of this clinic, Ilir Kurtishi, has provided a review of the situation for the first quarter of 2025.
Kurtishi announced about Kosova Prees, that every day the clinic treats 250,500 patients in the chemotherapy service and about 12050 patients in radio therapy service.
Oncology Clinic has no waiting lists for patients who need immediate treatment, both radio therapy and chemotherapy.
Kurtish stressed that during this six-month period, there has been no case that has been referred to for treatment abroad. This, thanks to advanced techniques such as IMRT and steroids, which have significantly reduced the need for treatment outside Kosovo.
In terms of essential drugs, Kurtishi said the clinic is supplied at 80%. He added that five drugs are missing due to legal barriers and procurement procedures, but the main drugs are available.
Patients have to provide themselves with drugs missing from the clinic.
He concluded by saying that the Oncology Clinic is constantly in need of increasing the number of nurses, as there is currently a shortage of them./Periscopi/
