In an announcement that will be released at the Federal Record on Tuesday, The UN emphasises that a 12-month testing programme will be launched, under which people from countries considered to be high rates of illegal positions after the visa is expired and lacking in control of internal documents may be required to hand over a guarantee of 5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 when applying for visas.
The proposal comes as the Trump administration stiffens the requirements for visa applicants.
Last week, the State Department announced that many applicants for visa renovations would have to undergo an additional personal interview, which was not previously required.
Besides, The UN is proposing that applicants for the Visa Lottary programme have valid passports from their citizenship site.
A review of the guarantee announcement, which was published on the Federal Record website Monday, underscores that the testing programme will come into force within 15 days of official publication and is needed to ensure that the American government does not financially remain responsible if a visitor does not abide by the terms of his or her visa.
“Foreigners applying for visas as temporary visitors for business or pleasure and who are citizens of countries identified by the department as with high levels of visa violations, with shortcomings in information for verification and control, or who offer citizenship through investment, if this citizenship is taken without a request for residence in the country, can become subject to test program”, the statement said.
It is also said that affected countries will be listed once the programme goes into effect.
This guarantee will not apply to citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Programme (Visa Weaver Programme) and can be excluded for others depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant.
Visa guarantees have been proposed before, but have not been implemented.
The State Department has traditionally discouraged this demand due to the complex process of depositing and returning guarantees, as well as due to wrong perceptions that could be created in public.
However, the department said this previous “stance is not supported by any recent example or testimony, since visa guarantees have not been generally requested in any recent period”. / REL/Periscopi/
