Russia and Ukraine will hold a new round of peace talks in Istanbul on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
“Today, I discussed with (head of the Ukraine Security Council) Rustem Umrov preparations for a prisoner exchange and another meeting in Turkey with the Russian side”, Zelensky said in his daily speech Monday. “Werov reported that the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. ”
Zelensky proposed new talks at the weekend, days after US President Donald Trump threatened Russia with sanctions “severe” if there were no ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev within 50 days, the BBC reports, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
Washington has also pledged new weapons to the Ukrainian Army after Russia intensified the attacks, the BBC reports.
Moscow has not commented on peace talks yet. Russian news agency RIA, citing a source, said talks would be held during two days, Thursday and Friday.
A Turkish government spokesman said Wednesday's talks would be held in Istanbul -- the same place where the previous negotiations in May and June failed to operate towards a ceasefire, news agency Agence France-Press reported.
This week's talks will be another attempt to end the war that has lasted for more than three years and will come after Trump voiced disappointment with Vladimir Putin. The American president told the BBC he was “disappointed”, but “had not finished with the Russian leader”.
