Trump threatens Japan with higher tariffs, disagrees with rice imports

US President Donald Trump has threatened to place higher tariffs on Japanese exports to the US, claiming Japan refuses to buy American rice. He has written in Truth Social that Japan has a severe lack of rice and that it does not accept American rice. “They don't accept our rice while they have [...]
“They don't accept our rice while they're short of rice. We'll send you a letter and we want it as a trade partner for years,” wrote Trump.
However, according to CNN, commercial data has shown that this is not true. Japan has bought American rice for the value of $28 million over the past year, and in the first four months of this year, it has bought American rice for $184 million.
Trump's statement has not been directly commented by Japanese officials, but Cabinet Secretary Yosima Hayashi has said trade talks are under way and that Japan aims at an honest agreement for both sides.
Moreover, Trump has threatened Japan in a recent interview for Fox News saying: “Mr. Japan, you will pay a 25% fee for cars. ”
Amid trade tensions, Trump is expected to return reciprocal tariffs on July 9th, after a 90-day pause. Currently, Japan has faced a universal 10% fee, but earlier there had been a minimum rate of 24%.
The White House has announced that US-Japan trade negotiations are under way and that the possibility of a possible deal by the deadline is not ruled out./Periscopi/
