According to a statement by the US Treasury Department, the order signed on Monday provides sanctions relief for “the essential entities for Syria's development, the functioning of its government and the reconstruction of the social structure”.
The move also includes a review of existing definitions linking Syria to terrorism, aimed at paving the way for international co-operation, writes Al Jazeera, broadcasts Periscope.
The Syrian government has been subject to severe US sanctions since the start of the 2011 civil war, which have negatively affected efforts for economic and social recovery.
Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migrants Assad Hassan al-Shaibani welcomed the decision through a post on the X platform, calling it “a step that will open the doors for reconstruction and long-awaited development”.
He added that this move would remove a significant obstacle to economic recovery and help restore the country to the international stage.
The previous sanctions programme, based also on human rights violations by the previous regime, has severely hampered the reconstruction process and pushed the Syrian economy towards collapse.
Trump had promised relief measures for Syria during his visit to the Middle East in May.
