The Celje Police Department was informed shortly before 10:30 that a serious traffic accident had occurred on the Steyerska Highway shortly before the Breeding Zone in Tepanje (near the Slovennce Conjice exit), heading Ljubljana. According to initial police information, a truck driver crashed into the back of a truck in a convoy.
“Axident was extremely tragic, the site of the event is still being examined”, Jasna Bozic, Inspector of the Road Traffic Department of Unformed Police Station Celje, said in a press release.
Five people died at the scene, the truck driver was easily injured, and the passenger was severely injured.
The road accident's “was inappropriate speed. The driver, a Ukrainian national, crashed in the back of a fixed trailer”, Bozic said, given the initial findings. All the victims were from the van, which, according to initial information, carried seven people.
Initially, police announced that four people were dead. Later, the Police General Administration (GPU) confirmed to STA another victim.
All are foreign citizens; they still have no accurate information about where passengers came from in the van.
The identity of persons is still continuing at the scene”, police said. According to initial information, the truck driver is a Russian citizen and is not injured in the accident.
