U.S. tax removal required: Harshing Economy and Diplomatic Relations

Economic recognition in Kosovo is persistently demanding the immediate removal of the 10 per cent tax on imports from the United States, naming it an unacceptable act that is seriously damaging the country's strategic reports and economic development. Calling this tax “inexcusable and [...]
Calling this tax “unwarranted and harmful”, economic development connoisseurs stress for Kosova Preris that the emergency for its removal is not only economic but also political and geostrategic.
Economy expert Safet Gerjaliu sharply criticises Kosovo institutions for, as he says, lack of vision and failure to advance economic and diplomatic processes.
He estimates that the silence of Kosovo institutions and serious neglect to remove this tax are increasingly isolating the country in an economic, political and geostrategic way.
The first “is a disgrace of time for Kosovo, for a rescue state, a strategic ally, what are the United States of America, to be penalised with a 10 per cent tax on US imports. The second one, all of this, testifies to institutional immatureness in Kosovo. Third, all of this testifies that diplomacy, both political and particularly economic, is definitely buried in Kosovo. And effective diplomacy cannot be expected either in a political way or in an economic way, whether we have a Ministry of Foreign Affairs covered, or loaded with ignorant politicians, who really do more harm than they advance these processes. It's just been a more oral attempt by the presidency that this tax should be removed. But nothing really happened. What is most disturbing to Kosovo's future is the political, economic and economic silence of both the United States and European countries, as well as some Western Balkan countries”, Gerjaliu says.
In April of this year, President Vjosa Osmani had asked the executive to suspend the 10 per cent customs fee for goods coming from the US. This had come after US President Donald Trump had imposed tariffs on imports from Kosovo, and from other states.
It was criticised by incumbent Finance Minister Iron Murati, who had said <x0 fiscal policies fall in the executive's scope, namely, the ministry responsible for finance”.
Gerxhaliu says concerned about the drastic decline in exports from Kosovo to the US, which stresses that this is a direct consequence of close economic lack of co-operation.
Even the other economy connoisseur, Mustafe Kadrijaj, estimates that Kosovo should soon remove this tax on the US.
Kosovo needs a step forward to remove the move towards the US in the fact that, as if it were, it doesn't affect the economic report with the US in the fact that even if we don't have any taxes on the US, the entire product can not be cracked up in the US for a few minutes. Knowing our journey as Kosovo, I appreciate that the Kosovo government has to remove the tax and measures against the US”, Kadrijaj says.
The Kosovo Press issue has even sent questions to the presidency and the Government of Kosovo, but the same have not responded until the publication of this article.
Kosovo exports to the United States have suffered decline during the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. According to official data, from January to May 2025, Kosovo exported around 10.04m euros to the US, while in the first quarter of 2024, the figure was around 23.79m euros.
This shows a contraction of over 57.8 per cent, to more than 13.7m euros less goods exported to the US.
Kosovo imports from the United States have marked a decline in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year. According to official foreign trade data, from January to May 2025, Kosovo imported goods worth about 322m euros from the US, while in the first quarter of 2024, the value was about 356m euros.
