Suspects of police violence in Kline and Lipjan, Ombudsman launches investigation into possible human rights violations

The ombudsman's institution suggests that it has followed reported cases where Kosovo Police officials allegedly exercised violence against citizens on two separate cases -- one case taken in Cline and the other case recently in Lipjan -- in which a citizen loses his life. [...]
According to a media report, the exercise of force beyond that necessary constitutes serious violations of fundamental human rights guaranteed with the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo and international human rights instruments, including the European Convention on Human Rights.
In this case, the ombudsman recalls that police are tasked with protecting citizens and preserving public order, but always in accordance with law and with full respect for human dignity. Any excess of legal authorisations and any form of violence or mistreatment are unacceptable and should be addressed with full responsibility”, the statement said.
The move reportedly has opened investigative procedure under the official duty to assess whether human rights violations in these cases, as well as to monitor the actions of responsible institutions, including Kosovo Police and the Kosovo Police Inspectorate.
The ombudsman institution requires full transparency by competent institutions regarding the investigation of cases. It is also important to note the importance of implementing professional standards in any police intervention and the necessity of continued training for law officials. The ombudsman will continue to closely follow developments about these cases and undertake all necessary legal actions to protect citizens' rights”, the announcement said.
