The EP General Assembly session began with the commemoration ceremony of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, which was experienced in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1992-1995 war, and is named as the world's largest <x0-tradition in Europe since World War II”.
In her speech, EP President Roberta Metsola recalled that thousands of Bosnian Muslims were massacred, disappeared and forcibly displaced from their homes.
“Srebrenica should never happen again”, Metsola said.
Some of the MPs who appeared on the stage as part of the commemoration noted that Europe failed to prevent genocide in Srebrenica and that efforts must be made to prevent new genocides, acknowledging that genocides have been committed in Europe as well.
Matjaz Nemec, a Slovenian MP from the Alliance of Progress of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), said that: “Today, Europe is again making as if it does not know. The name of which Palestinian city will have to be written with blood in the books of human history so that we can go from words to actions?
Even Tineke Strike, a Dutch Eurodeputte from the Green Group, stressed: “We have the responsibility to learn from this failure and therefore we have to prevent the ongoing genocide in Gaza”./Periscopi/
