The Trump administration has revoted the Syrian organisation's definition, al-Nusra, as a foreign terrorist organisation, according to a document published on the internet today.
Islamic group Hayat Tarhir al-Sham (HTS) was once an al-Qaeda branch in Syria known as the al-Nusra front.
The document, dated 23 June and signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was published in a preview of the US Federal Register prior to its official publication Tuesday.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the US decision.
Hayat Tarhir al-Sham brought down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and now heads the Syrian interim government.
Its interim president, Ahmed al-Sahara, has taken the country out of the shadow and made dozens of official visits to foreign capitals.
US President Trump agreed to lift sanctions on Syria, met with al-Sahara in Riyadh and appointed a special US envoy for Syria.
The European Union has also decided to lift sanctions against Syria./Periscopi/
