A major explosion has hit an area inhabited in the Italian capital, causing 50 injuries, while authorities have calmed citizens over the toxic risk level stemming from the event.
The blast occurred in a liquid gas depot (LPG), causing widespread alarm and immediate mobilization of emergency forces.
According to Eros Manino, head of the National Fire Brigade, LPG is a neutral and not dangerous fuel for toxicity.
He added that although there was no major release of dangerous substances, there is the possibility that plastic or solid material may have produced dioxins because of their burning.
There was no large release of toxic substances in this specific case. It also depends on weather conditions: If there is a wind, if there is air flow, the atmosphere becomes more breathing, and pollution is spread more quickly,” explained Mannino.
The balance of the injured has increased to 50 people, including:
24 civilians
11 Police Effective
1 carabinieri
6 Firemen
Three emergency service operators.
According to health authorities, a police officer is in severe condition with severe burns and classified by red code, while others are out of danger to life. Some of the wounded sought medical help by going to the nearest emergency.
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Melon, has expressed her gratitude for all forces involved in the rescue operation.
I want to express, on behalf of the Government and Mine, heartfelt thanks to the Police Forces, the Fire Department, the Rome Local Police, Health and Civil Protection. Thanks to speed and professionalism in intervention, even more serious consequences were avoided,” Melon said in a public statement. /Periscope/
