For the first time last July 11th was marked as the International Genocide Day in Srebrenica at the United Nations headquarters in New York after this organisation adopted a resolution on Srebrenica on May 23rd.
Crime in Srebrenica in 2007 by the International Court of Justice in The Hague was recognised as genocide committed by the Republika Srpska Army. Srebrenica in July 1995 was a UN protected zone.
The same court found Serbia guilty of failing to prevent genocide. The court also said Serbia has violated its obligation to punish the chief genocide.
Before that decision, some courts have sentenced more than 50 people to over 700 years in prison for genocide and war crimes in Srebrenica.
Among them are former Republika Srpska President Radovan Karadzic and then Serb Army Commander General Ratko Mladic.
Both have been sentenced to life imprisonment. /Periscope/
