KMDLNJ sounds the alarm: Workers in construction at temperatures up to 38 degrees in the mercy of employers

Workers, especially in the construction sector, in extreme temperatures of these days, have been left at the mercy of employers and faced with a lack of minimum conditions in the workplace, praised the chairman of the Council for Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms ( KMDLNj), Behxhet Shala. He told EO that police and prosecutors are only taken [...]
He told EO that police and prosecutors only deal with the consequences, while lack of inspection and surveillance is leading to serious injuries, disabilities and fatal cases.
And actually, we in response want to precede processes so that workers can be protected at work. Police and prosecutors are mainly dealing with the consequences, as the consequences, whether serious injuries or permanent disabilities or fatal outcomes, are taking place. It's inconsistent. You see at temperatures of 36 to 38 degrees, workers work in the builder when there are no minimum conditions for their safety. Besides, part-time work. Remember, workers work to preserve a job that is perhaps the only source of the family to provide a survival. Workers are often not equipped with protective measures, although they are said to have purchased them with protective equipment but are not using them. However, they dare not allow a worker to work without protective measures”, Shala said.
He points out the low number of inspectors, which is not even nearly enough for the needs on the ground.
There aren't enough inspections in construction. There are so many constructions that if an entire army of inspectorate were taken up, they could not cover it all. With a symbolic number of inspectors it is impossible to cover these jobs. That's why there's also disaster”, Shala added.
It lays out the need for an emergency fund to be established for compensation of victims' families and those that remain with permanent consequences.
“We have proposed that simply create a special fund, which would at least deal with the compensation of the family or providing the conditions for the family when cases of fatality or life disability occur. So far it's not working. There are some help that the employer or anyone else can provide. We can say that workers in Kosovo are almost entirely vulnerable and are at the mercy of employers and weather, whether too hot or too cold”, Shala said. /Periscope/
