After two hours of trial, the Travisos Court in Italy has declared the maximum sentence for Bujar Faden, the 40-year-old native of Kosovo who confessed to killing Vanessa Ballan, 26, the mother of a child and pregnant at the time of the crime.
The tragic event took place on December 19, 2023, in Youth Pio X, a municipality in the province of Traviso.
Fashani had entered the victim's apartment by force opening a window and stabbed him eight times. Vanessa was found lifeless by her partner, who was also the father of the child she was expecting.
The courtroom was filled with intense emotion during the proclamation of judgment. Vanessa's parents burst into tears when the decision was read.
“Justice is done, but you're cursed for life”, they said in an explosion of pain and anger.
The prosecution had sought the worst possible sentence for Fadin, who at the last session was present and represented by lawyers Chiara Mazacoto and Daria Bissol. He returned immediately to prison after declaring the decision.
The Italian authorities' investigations showed that Fadi and Ballan had had a romantic relationship that was suspended in the summer of 2023, with the victim's decision.
According to the prosecution, he had rejected partition and is believed to have committed the crime of revenge.
After the act of murder, Faraj had attempted to escape from Italy, but was captured by Carabinieri several hours later in his apartment.
Initially, he confessed to crime, though he later tried to deny preconception.
The case shocked public opinion in Italy and beyond, fuelling controversy over violence against women and the lack of protection against victims of previous violent ties.
