This is the first bilateral official meeting between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan since reaching agreement on a draft peace agreement, after nearly four decades of conflict.
The results of this meeting will affect the future of the South Caucasus, not only because the two leaders will agree, but also the fact that Russia, for the first time, has been excluded from the Armenian-Azerbaijanas equation, reports euronews.
And this exception did not come from Moscow initiative. Both Baku and Yerevan have gradually distanced from the Kremlin in recent years, as their relations with Russia have deteriorated significantly.
The meeting in Abu Dhabi has also preceded a similar bilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
While confined to the war in Ukraine, Moscow is gradually losing its influence on the former Soviet Union space. The most obvious change in this regard is the loss of Russia's several-decade dominance over the South Caucasus region.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan took full control over the Karabakh region after a quick military campaign, ending the several-year conflict with Armenia, in which the Kremlin had played a central role for years.
Nearly two years later, Yerevan and Baku are writing stories without Russia, agreeing to the text of the peace agreement and normalising relations after a bloody conflict that until recently had no apparent end. /Periscope/
