According to two British officials, the text of the treaty is almost finalised and the signing is intended to occur before the two countries' parliaments are distributed for summer holidays.
While the treaty will reaffirm Berlin and London's commitment to NATO as a basis of collective security, the inclusion of a mutual protection clause emphasises a new and closer approach of European allies in the area of security, at a time when the US role in NATO is seen more and more as fluctuating, eo conveys.
The treaty is also expected to have a broad stretch, including areas like:
- Fighting Illegal Migration
- Co-operation in Transport, Research and Innovation
- Promoting Cross-border Trade
“The treaty will cover the entire spectrum of our relations,” stated a German Foreign Ministry spokesman for “Politco”.
