He stresses that at the moment, the top and most urgent priority is the outcome of the large-scale war Ukraine is experiencing, which has caused a humanitarian crisis and massive destruction of infrastructure.
Merz explains that only after the end of the conflict and the start of the country's reconstruction process will Ukraine have the real opportunity to meet the conditions needed for EU membership. This reconstruction process is expected to be long and difficult, but at the end of it, according to German Chancellor Ukraine will be in a much better position to integrate into the European family.
Membership in the European Union requires political stability and security -- two elements currently lacking due to the conflict. Therefore, for Ukraine's future in the EU, peace and stability are the main preconditions.
The Chancellor emphasises that Europe must support Ukraine in these difficult moments, offering humanitarian and economic assistance for reconstruction, but at the same time should be realistic in expectations for the country's immediate EU integration.
In this context, Merz's vision is that Ukraine, after having passed the phase of war and reconstruction, becomes a powerful and complete part of the European Union, strengthening not only the country but also the stability and security of the entire Eastern European region. /Periscope/
