Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has responded to journalists' questions accompanying him on the return flight from Azerbaijan, regarding the purchase of F-35 US aircraft and Greece's stance on the issue.
According to foreign media, the Turkish president argued that Greece's “concern about the steps we have taken in the defence sector is inadequate and pointless”, saying that “Turkey poses no threat to any country that does not threaten its security and interests and does not demonstrate a hostile attitude towards it”.
He also mentioned that he discussed the F-35 issue with Donald Trump at their meeting in the margins of the recent NATO Summit, and added that he hoped the US president would stick to the agreement they made on the issue.
Erdogan added he hoped the gradual surrender of F-35 to Turkey would occur during his mandate, writes A2 CNN, broadcast Periscope.
We want F-35 primarily for our safety. The F-35 issue is not only a military technology issue for us, but also a strong international co-operation issue, such as NATO. Of course, this issue allowed us to speed up our efforts in the defence industry. Strengthening our protective infrastructure poses no threat to anyone. Especially our friends and our allies.
At the recent NATO summit, the decision was made to boost Allied defence spending. So the decision was made that NATO countries must strengthen their defence infrastructure to cover their needs so that NATO defence can also be strengthened. Greece's concern for the steps we have taken in the defence sector is therefore inappropriate and meaningless.
Turkey poses no threat to any country that does not threaten its security and interests and does not demonstrate a hostile attitude towards it. On the contrary, Turkey is a country that makes every effort to ensure peace, tranquillity and security in its region and the world and is extremely reliable with its friends.
There is no conflict in our environment that Turkey would not try to end peacefully. We discussed the F-35 issue between us and we're monitoring it. I believe Mr. Trump will remain loyal to the agreement we made on this matter. I believe that the gradual surrender of F-35 to Turkey will take place during his mandate”, Erdogan said, among other things. /Periscope
