The release was part of a coordinated exchange of prisoners, where 10 Americans held in Venezuela returned to the United States, officials from all three countries said.
In an X post, El Salvador President Nayb Bukele said that Americans were on their way to El Salvador from where they would continue their “journey home” Reuters writes, broadcast Periscope.
While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the release of “the Americans who were detained in Venezuela”. He thanked Boule for his help in securing the deal.
Venezuela's government said 252 Venezuelans held in El Salvador had been released. President Nicolas Maduro celebrated the arrival of two planes that transported them to Karaka on Friday evening.
Venezuelans were sent to El Salvador from the United States in March, after US President Donald Trump called the 1798 Foreign Enemy Act to quickly deport suspected members of the “-Tren de Aragu” without going through normal immigration procedures. They were held at El Salvador's notorious maximum security prison CECOT.
