The operator “Deutsche Bahn” said the train crashed in Riedlingen near Stutgart for unknown “reasons”. Reports say there had been a storm in the area just before.
About 100 people were aboard the train when at least two cars pulled off track in an area of the forest around 18:10 local time, German news agency DPA reported.
German Chancellor Fridrich Merz expressed his deepest condolences to the victims' families in an X post.
He said he was in close contact with the interior and transport ministers and has asked them to offer emergency services all the support they need.
In a statement, Ulmi's police said the current investigations showed that “three persons were killed and other passengers seriously injured”.
The shock images show the cars turned aside and the large presence of emergency service, while firemen and emergency teams worked to get in to the stranded passengers. Falled trees can also be seen at the scene, writes BBC./Periscope/
