A Japanese businessman has been sentenced to three and a half years in China for spying, the Japanese Embassy in Beijing said.
The man, described by Japan's news agency “Kyodo” as an employee of “Astellas Pharma Inc.” with headquarters in Tokyo in the 60s, was first detained in March 2023 and put under official arrest in October.
“in light of the sentence, we have once again demanded the early release of Japanese citizens involved in this case, as well as of the others detained”, the Tokyo Embassy in Beijing said in a statement Wednesday.
China also needs to ensure their legitimate rights and human treatment during the “ban and “improve transparency of the judicial process”, the embassy said.
Japanese Ambassador Kenji Kanasug called the decision “extremely sorry” in comments to the media after trial at the No. Two of Beijing.
