According to reports by foreign media, in a letter to Brazilian authorities, Trump has cited as the reason for the increase in tariffs, treatment being done to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
It is known that Bolsonaro is currently on trial, accused of trying to organise a coup against Lula after losing in the 2022 elections. However, Trump through a post on Social Truth described Bolson as “a widely respected world leader”, saying that “this trial should not be held,” and calling for this “witch judiciary” to be stopped immediately, against former presidents.

In a post on the X platform, Lula stressed that Brazil is “a sovereign state with independent institutions and will not accept any kind of dictatorship”. The head of the Brazilian state also announced that “any unilateral increase in tariffs” would be countering taxes equal to American goods.
The US is Brazil's second-largest trading partner, after China, to an increase in tariffs from 10% to 50% would have a major impact on the country's economy. /Periscopi/
