Azem: Insecurate and Employers Guilty to Workplace Deaths

Two workers died at the post today in Gjakova. The case is confirmed by Kosovo Police. The number of dead in the workplace this year has reached 17 persons”, says Private Sector Union Chairman Yusuf Azemi. According to him, the blame for the large number of worker deaths is [...]
After falling from the height of an object under construction, two workers died in the workplace in Gjakova. Police spokesman for the Gjakova region Sheremet Elesaj has confirmed the case for Radio Kosovo.
He has said that “sot around 08:15, we have reported that two people (major men) have been sent for medical treatment to the Regional Hospital in Gjakova, allegedly due to injuries suffered at the workplace. Then their death has been confirmed”, Elezaj said. He has said the relevant police units are taking investigative action in order to clarify the circumstances of the case.
Last week another 25-year-old has died, having fallen from the height of the Grand Hotel facility in Pristina while cleaning windows.
Private Sector Union Chairman Yusuf Azemi says it is extremely disturbing to see the number of dead in the workplace every day.
Unfortunately, this year is a very bad year for Kosovo private sector workers, because with these two cases today in Gjakova, the number of dead in the workplace has reached 17. In the overwhelming part of these cases, it is the human factor that has influenced us to have these cases of death. So the workers' lives unfortunately are at a very low price”, he said.
Besides employers, who are not offering workers adequate conditions and job security, there is just as much blame for deaths in the workplace, says Labour Inspectorate.
I haven't seen any major action this year of the Labour Inspectorate, so that at least the number of dead workers is smaller, even though, only one if I die, for us too. The Labour Inspectorate is obliged to enforce the Law on Safety and Health at Work, and these, not that they can't help someone, but that the Inspectorate needs someone to help them, because there's a mess there and there's nothing you expect from them”, Azemi said.
Radio Kosovo has asked the Labour Inspectorate for the number of workers who have died as a result of injuries at the workplace this year, and has requested additional information about the deaths of two fellow workers in Gjakova. From the Inspectorate, however, no response has been given to the preparation of this material.
