MP Abraham wants Kosovo soon to enter the KiE, seeks Germany's pro-active role in this direction

In an interview published on the German Bundestag website, Abraham, who was newly elected as leader of the German delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PVER), said Kosovo has met all conditions to become the body's newest member, reports Kankosova.tv.

“In doing so, I also want to work on better and more effective implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and help that the last European democracy that is not yet a member of the institution and has met all conditions is soon to become a member: Kosova”, Abraham said.

He hopes Germany, particularly “, will play a pro-active and principled role in the Committee of Ministers” on the Kosovo membership issue in the KiE.

Kosovo has applied for membership in the Council of Europe May 2022. But the country was left out of the agenda at the Council of Ministers meeting of this mechanism, which ran works in Strasbourg in 17.05,2024.

This is because the Kosovo government had not submitted for consideration to the Constitutional Court an EU draft statute for establishing the Association of Serb-run municipalities, which was set condition for Kosovo for membership in this organisation.

By May 15th, 2024, meanwhile, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti had accepted a letter from French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Melon, who express support for the EU's proposal for Association, and not just for Pristina's pledges, without concrete steps.

“As such, he enjoys our full support. Let's stress once again that we don't want an dysfunctional Kosovo, association is in no way comparable to Republika Srpska”, the letter of the three European leaders said.

In Macron's letter, Scholz and Melon, it clearly underlined that “exists the real danger that without decisive progress for association, Kosovo's application to the Council of Europe will not receive sufficient support from member states”. /Periscope/
