“Other 5 days of deadline” ) business organizations on alert: ZRREE risking economy with hasty decisions

Energy Regulatory Office ( ZRERE has warned that all businesses currently supplied with electricity from the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK), as part of the Last possible provider (FMF), will remain without power unless they connect contracts with licensed suppliers by July 30th 2025. According to ZRE, this supply [...]

According to ZRE, this supply is a temporary measure, which serves to guarantee electricity to consumers who have remained without commercial suppliers for any reason. However, the deadline of this guaranteed supply cannot last more than 60 days and for no reason will continue after the high date.

This situation has sparked sharp reactions from private sector representatives.

Agim Sahin, chairman of the Kosovo Alliance of Business (AKB), has declared that many businesses have been forced to move swiftly to link new contracts with licensed suppliers, due to the very short deadline the ZRE has set.

This is an unnecessary pressure on the private sector, which is facing many challenges even without this new crisis,” has said Sahin for Periscope. According to him, there is real danger that after July 30th a large number of businesses will remain without electricity, which would have major consequences for the economy, jeopardising the jobs and financial stability of companies.

Sahin estimates this situation is a direct consequence of the ZRE's pressing and unprepared “decisions, supported by the Kosovo Government”. It requires that ZRE urgently postpone or withdraw this deadline to prevent another crackdown on the private sector.

He has also cited the fact that some businesses have won court cases against ZRE, but despite that, according to him, “are not even being respected by court decisions on ZRE. ”

“We will continue to stay close to businesses, support all legal and public initiatives to protect their rights, and invite institutions to take responsibility before it is late,” is expressed.

In the same critical line is Besart Dresaj, chairman of the Kosovo Business League, which the ZRE ruling considers “harmful and with consequences to the economy”.

Dress says the <x0 threat that is making ZRE towards businesses violently, throwing them into the free market, is a message that they are not accepting reality and are not agreeing to the current difficulties”. He points out that “should not and dares not have any organ that leaves citizens or businesses without electricity, because both the Constitution and the law imposes on institutions to provide continuous supply for all”.

Over the past few months, part of the businesses remained without regular electricity suppliers and temporarily passed under the auspices of the Last possible provider KEK in this case, which offers service for 60 days in order not to have immediate power cuts. This legal deadline is now ending, and despite warnings, many businesses have still failed to link new contracts.

Business representatives say the lack of ZRE flexibility in this process and the lack of a real transit solution are creating an alarming situation for the private sector in Kosovo. /Periscope/
