He spoke of the horror that has accompanied this event and the importance of building a brighter future for the region and the world.
Rutte stressed that the Srebrenica tragedy should never be forgotten, adding: “Today we mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, a tragedy that shocked the world and that forever connected my country with yours. I visited Potocari as prime minister of the Netherlands. We will never forget the horrors of those days, and our thoughts are with all those who were touched. It is our obligation to build a brighter future.”
Speaking of NATO's role in Bosnia, he said: “Dayton is probably not perfect, but remains the cornerstone for a stable Bosnia and Herzegovina. NATO intervened in Bosnia to help prevent a conflict that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives from all communities. Then we were there for you. For 30 years we have offered stability in the region. We are with you today and we will be with you in the future. We won't allow a security vacuum, and you shouldn't let divisive rhetoric pull you back.
