Today marks the 15th anniversary of the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion in The Hague, which on July 22nd 2010, confirmed that Kosovo's February 17th 2008 declaration of independence did not constitute violations of international law.
Under this decision, the declaration of independence violated neither the international law nor the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 nor the provisional constitutional framework of Kosovo.
The then GND chairman, Hisashi Owada, had stressed that international law contains no stops for declaring independence from a political subject, underlining that Kosovo had not acted in opposition to any applicable norms.
